I'm an ass

July 14, 2004 · 1 Comment

When you make changes to a server, that require a reboot ... make sure you set the thing to restart and not shutdown!!! That'll be the reason why the site was unavilable for the fair majority of today. I'm an ass!

Thunderbird Email Client

July 11, 2004 · 4 Comment s

Well, I've decided to move from Outlook to Thunderbird as my primary email client at home. After using Outlook for years, mainly because that's what I used at work, I've finally made the change. My laptop is already hooked up, accessing via IMAP and I'll get around to moving my main home machine over sometime this week. Unfortunately I'm going to have to stick to Groupwise at work (for work email) - and Groupwise sucks more than an industrial strength hoover. When I moved job 9 months ago now I never imagined having to work with something so goddam awful, but such is life. Also, because both POP3 and IMAP ports are blocked by our IT guys at work, I can't use Thunderbird, which is utter crap. Another one of the negative points moving from a job where I controlled everything to one where I do 100% pure web development.

Novell, Novell, oh how I hate you

June 22, 2004 · No Comments

Since moving job 8 months ago, I've still not got used to going from a Windows network client environment to a Netware one. It just doesn't seem ... right. Add to this moving from an Exchange/Outlook email environment to a Groupwise one ... well I still don't care one iota for Groupwise. It's simply awful. You cannot easily add recurring appointments to your calendar (you have to script it), the email archiving mechanism is utterly woeful - look, it sucks OK! And then of course there is iChain. I've still to find/conjure/bullshit a good reason as to why we use this product. It uses Java and XML yet the code it produces still isn't even XHTML compliant. It's a freaking nightmare. Oh, and to add to the misery, Novell's support is awful. Even most of the people that work there don't seem to have a clue what's going on.

£14 for Irn Bru!

June 10, 2004 · 3 Comment s

It's amazing what people will put up on sale on Ebay. Doing some random searches, I decided to have a look for everything "Irn Bru". Amazingly someone has got 5 cans of Irn Bru up for sale at a starting bid of £4.50!!!! Add to that the delivery charge of £9.50!!! OK, so it may be the greatest drink in the world never mind Scotland, and it may cure every type of hangover known to man but come on, you'd be cheaper just getting flights to Scotland and buying your own!.

Chapter Overload

June 07, 2004 · No Comments

I often wonder if I am overdoing it in regards reading too many books at once. I'm currently reading The Midnight Club by James Patterson whilst I travel to/from work. On the topic of work, I'm currently reading Java for ColdFusion Developers by Eben Hewitt as well as Regular Expressions in 10 Minutes by Ben Forta. And if that wasn't enough, I'm also reading Web ReDesign: Workflow that Works by Kelly Goto & Emily Cotler. Better to be busy I guess, after all you know what the Lord says about Idle Hands ... too many opportunities to drink pints at the local. Edit: I've just got my hands on Programming ColdFusion MX by Rob Brooks-Bilson too :)
