Scottish ColdFusion User Group - I'm Outta Here (Kinda)
August 30, 2006 · 4 Comment s
Yes, it's true. I've officially stepped down as the Scottish ColdFusion User Group manager.
There will be a newsletter going out to all group subscribers later tonight, or maybe early tomorrow to give the complete lowdown on the groups future.
The quick version is that Stephen Moretti is taking over as manager, and I'm now the co-manager/sysadmin/drunk.
The last two years have been a blast, and I'll miss emailing Ed Sullivan at Adobe on a daily basis with countless amounts of abuse.
Anyway, I need to get back to work as I'm fricking busy.
Oh yeah, Children of Bodom are AWESOME!!!

Flex Training Let Down ;)
July 01, 2005 · No Comments
I had a fiendishly evil cunning plan for last nights Building Collaborative Applications with Macromedia Flex (and Flash Comm Server) talk at the UK RIA Group in Edinburgh.
It was simple and completely full proof. Provide Steven Webster with large quantities of alcohol and then get him to agree to letting me attend the next Flex training course at Tidalfire for only £50!!!
What could go wrong!!!
Well, as it turns out, Steven was driving and therefore my plan was about as useful as a kite in space. However, not to be discouraged I asked anyway. Can you guess what his answer was ...
Ah well, at least it meant I could use the £ 50 and get a decent round in, though typically this was after both Steven and Andrew Shorten had left. I've been promosing to buy Steven a drink for about 18 months and still haven't splashed the cash. Ack, he's loaded anyway ;)
And talking of Andrew, who is a pre-sales consultant at Macromedia, he gave an excellent presentation on collaboration environments using Flex, Breeze and Flash Comm. He also gave a short spiel about the new Flash Platform and gave out free trials for Studio MX 2006, Flex 2 and yes I'm now making this up ...

Scottish CFUG: Fusebox/John Beynon
April 29, 2005 · 4 Comment s
Just back from a fun packed day of Fusebox 4.1 with John Beynon in Edinburgh at the Scottish CFUG.
He spent the afternoon with Edinburgh University, who were kindly sponsoring the event, before giving the User Group talk at night.
Lots of good info, for those new to Fusebox and those already using previous versions.
The lucky sod now gets to spend the weekend on holiday up here in a swanky hotel living the highlife! And he never even bought me a pint!
Beynon ... your card is marked!

Team Fusebox member John Beynon will be presenting at the ScottishCFUG two weeks tonight (Apr 28th) on Fusebox 4.1
This talk has been around 6 months in the making, but due to this and that it's been continuosly put on hold. However, we're finally getting to fly John up to Edinburgh, and as well as giving the talk, he's also spending some time with Edinburgh University who are sponsoring the event.
Edinburgh Uni are big ColdFusion (and Fusebox) users, so they'll undoubtedly reap the benefits of John's knowledge and experience.
And of course, after the evening talk we'll be hitting the pub for a few beers.

We'll also have a bundle of Fusebox books to give away, so sign up to make sure you don't miss out!

UK RIA meeting last night
March 11, 2005 · No Comments
Went along to the UK RIA meeting in Edinburgh last night to see the guys from iteration::two get drunk ... no, I mean talk about building your first RIA with Flex, as well as Offline RIAs with Flex and Central.
Having seen Flex apps in action before from both in the flesh meetings, as well as those presented by Breeze, I've experienced the "wow" factor quite a few times now.
However, last nights presentations went a bit deeper with Steven (Webster) and Andy (Rayne) demo'ing pre-made code as well as some "on the fly" coding with MXML. And it was at that point that it really hit me just how powerful, and how easy* it is to create an RIA compared to the torment that would be Flash - let the flame war commence! :)
*by easy I mean just how simple the MXML is that allows you to create layouts, panels, objects, etc
It really has given me the jump start to finally install Flex and get to grips with the little guy. And of course I've got the - cue blatant plug - Flex book as co-authered by Steven and Alistair (McLeod) to guide me along.
In all a really worthwhile meeting as it didn't involve the marketing/sales crap that I've experienced so far - you got me at "Hello" - and I'd definately like to see more meetings at this sort of coding level.
The only disappointing thing was not having the energy to heckle the iteration::two guys. Maybe next time.
(last night was the first time I've ever heard MVC called 'kinky' - care to explain gentlemen lol)
