Flying is becoming a pain the ar$e

February 10, 2008 · 6 Comment s

I'm in London this week giving training (a customised version of our CF Admin courses), and I flew down from Edinburgh.

I left the house at 11.30am, arrived at Edinburgh airport around 12.30pm, for a flight at 2.50pm. I eventually got booked into my hotel at 7.15pm.

So it took me around 8 hours to get from my house to my hotel. It's about 400 miles.

If I had travelled by train (assuming no incidents) I would have been here a lot earlier. I'm seriously reconsidering how I travel between Edinburgh and London. Plus I could have worked on the train down!

I feel your pain , I am sitting in st louis right now due to a delayed flight they haven't even committed to a new flight time yet... I have a feeling I might be here awhile.

You made your own bed here, so I don't really have any sympathy for you flying internally within the UK, it's a bit of a ridiculous luxury that is not really doing us any good.

Besides the amount of time travelling to the airport + check-in often offsets the flight time making a train journey only marginally longer.

That said, GNER are the only train company whom I have never had problems with - the East Coast service has to be the best in the UK for train journeys. The sleeper service is also a good option here.

    Take the plunge...

I've tried flying and the train. If I don't need to go down and back same day, I'll almost always take the train as I don't lose any productive time other that a few minutes to get o and off the train. With flights you lose time going through security and can't work on a laptop for much of the flight.

View also nicer on the train, and they even use a better quality of cardboard to make the sandwiches from so they taste marginally better :-

That said, sometimes flying can be cheaper . . .

The main problem I have with the train is mainly due to the fact I need to leave late on the night I am travelling home. So I usually miss the last "reasonable" service.

OK I could take the sleeper, but if I get the last flight home I can be back to the family and in my bed by midnight.

If I take the train down, and fly home, it ends up stupidly expensive.

Ultimately I'm all for the train - it's potentially a better solution, and more productive - I'm just trying to find a solution that works best alround.
