Top Metal Albums 2009

2009 for me was a poor year for metal. Sure, we had a lot of records from a lot of acomplished bands appear; Slayer, Megadeth, Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Kreator, God Forbid, etc, etc.

However, I've really struggled to put together a list of 10 albums that I would consider essential. This is based on my tastes and I'm sure there's many metal fans out there who could easily put a list of 10 (or more) together.

  1. Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings
  2. Megadeth - Endgame
  3. Immortal - All Shall Fall
  4. Kreator - Hordes of Chaos
  5. Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue

In addition to these, I've also had a number of records from previous years spend a fair bit of time playing through the speakers, including:

  1. Machine Head - The Blackening
  2. Anthrax - Sound of White Noise
  3. Xentrix - For Whose Advantage?
  4. Entombed - To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth
  5. Suicidal Tendencies - Lights Camera... Revolution

Personally, I'm hoping fr a better 2010 in regards metal.

Yeah I agree with your #1 and #2. I saw Dream Theater live twice this year (and for the first time in 2008) and they were amazing in both shows (even moreso in their own show when they followed Unexpect, Big Elf and Opeth). I was glad Megadeth had a nice solid release with oldschool facemelting solos too :)

As far as other new stuff goes Lamb of God are now on my radar and Porcupine Tree (even though not strictly metal) released a quite different album that is still growing on me. Other than that I've been reaching into the back catalog of metal bands that I previously haven't listened to much (Opeth, Lamb of God, Testament).

And for favourite rock album of the year I'd say it's got to be Them Crooked Vultures. Grohl + Homme = rock!

I still haven't had my metal quota filled though... I'll give a listen to Immortal and Kreator I think.
